Trauma-Focused Therapy
(EMDR)

SERVICES

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a core component of my approach to treating trauma. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that has been shown to be highly effective in treating PTSD. Unlike other therapeutic approaches, EMDR involves relatively little talking, and incorporates bilateral stimulation (most commonly, eye movements) while focusing on specific traumatic memories to assist the brain in healing from symptoms of trauma. EMDR can take some time to get used to, but it has brought about some major positive shifts in the lives of many clients I have worked with over the years. If you would like to know more about EMDR, I suggest checking out the EMDRIA website.

Consultation: 15-20 Minutes

Our initial consultation will involve discussion about what you would like to address in therapy, a brief overview of EMDR, and what you are looking for in a therapist. The main goal will be to mutually determine whether this is a good fit and go from there.

First Session: 55+ Minutes

During the first session we will discuss your history and set the stage for EMDR therapy by explaining the process to you and identifying and/or establishing coping skills that will help you throughout the treatment process. This process generally takes 1-4 sessions to complete, but can vary significantly from client to client.

Regular Sessions: 55+ Minutes

Moving forward, we will begin to assess specific traumatic memories, learning more about how they impact you both emotionally and physically. I will then work with you to process those memories using sets of eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) with shifts in focus as needed until your level of distress associated with the trauma is relieved. We will also work on identifying negative self-beliefs associated with the traumas and reframing them into more empowering beliefs. It's important to note that you are in the driver's seat; the therapy is dynamic and can be adjusted according to your needs and comfort at any point. Progress will regularly be monitored and goals will be routinely revisited and altered as necessary.

Session Frequency:

For EMDR therapy to be effective, it's important to meet at least once per week. A full course of treatment can take a variable amount of time, but in my experience, it typically takes at least eight to ten consecutive sessions before a specific treatment plan is complete. Remember that traumatic experiences often live with us for many years, and it requires time and patience to effectively heal from them.
